Description: One of the
biggest challenges facing society is to achieve ecological sustainability.
Although much discussion has been centered on the importance of ecological
sustainability to humans and many researchers have studied conceptual and
theoretical aspects of ecological sustainability, relatively few effective
approaches have been developed to explore ecological sustainability at multiple
scales. This symposium features leading scientists who take innovative
approaches to addressing complex and emerging issues related to ecological
sustainability across spatial, temporal, and organizational scales. Spatial
scales range from ecosystems, to landscapes, to the entire earth system;
temporal scales extend from 3,000 years in the past to 200 years in the future;
and organizational scales vary from villages, towns, counties, cities, provinces
(states), to countries. The speakers will present and synthesize cutting-edge
studies from around the world, provide insightful perspectives, and discuss
future directions for integrated research on ecological sustainability.
