Description: In a 2004
Science article, Jo Handelsman and colleagues coined the term “Scientific
Teaching” and called on science faculty to bring the rigor of scientific
research to their teaching. This will require the use of student-active
approaches based on learning theories and systematic assessment of the
approaches in classrooms and other field settings. In this way faculty can
experiment with their teaching approaches and grow as educators throughout their
careers. This session will demonstrate Scientific Teaching in the context of
ecology education. Opening speakers will explain some of the cognitive and
learning-based theories that underlie ecology education research. This will be
followed by undergraduate, K-12, and informal education case studies and
research that exemplify ecological scientific teaching. The session will
conclude with a discussion about trends, issues, and frontiers in ecology
education research as they relate to Scientific Teaching.
