Symposium 21: Resource pulses in space and time:
Linking species, communities, and ecosystems
Thursday, August 11, 1:30 PM - 5 PM, Meeting Room
517c, Level 5, Palais des congrès de Montréal
Organizers: Louie
Yang, Michael Vanni (lhyang@ucdavis.edu), Weston
Nowlin, Kenneth Schmidt
Description: In many
systems, natural resource variability in space and time includes episodes of
ephemeral superabundance that occur after long intervals. The emerging concept
of resource pulses seeks to identify general patterns among these diverse and
extreme events of resource variation. Much of this research integrates both
spatial and temporal scales, and this session will attempt to link research at
species, community and ecosystem levels of organization across a wide range of
ecosystems. The broad goal of this symposium is to identify key issues and new
directions in the study of resource pulses: (1) What is the scope of the resource pulse concept? (2) What
is the relevance of resource pulses to diverse natural systems? (3) How do
environmental and climatic factors contribute to resource pulses? (4) What are
the direct and indirect effects of resource pulses on species, communities, and
ecosystems? (5) What are conceptual and theoretical parallels between temporal
resource pulses and spatial resource subsidies?
