Description: Asia is
most populous, with over 3.8 billion people, among all continents in the world
and its population is expected to exceed 5.2 billion by 2050. Besides the
pressure of expanding population, industrialization and westernized life styles
in Asia, fostered by rapid economic growth, are an unprecedented burden to the
global environment. Predictions for future global environment rely on accurate
assessments of ecological impacts of the growing population and economy.
However, such predictions are challenged by the unprecedented past and the
uncertain future environment. This symposium presents a conceptual basis for
assessing the ecological impacts of Asian population and economy on the global
environment. The topics include biodiversity, desertification and policy
implications, sustainable grassland management, food production and nitrogen
cycle, and fossil fuel consumption and carbon cycle.
