Symposium
12: Bridging the divide: Bringing theory into practice in forest biodiversity
conservation
Wednesday,
August 10, 8 AM - 11:30 AM, Meeting Room 517c, Level 5, Palais
des congrès de Montréal
Organizers:

Palik
Description: Emerging
threats such as global climate change and exotic invasive species are
challenging traditional approaches to biodiversity conservation. Matrix-based
strategies – those that strive to make working lands less hostile to
biodiversity – have increasing appeal, but have not been well tested. This
symposium confronts the utility of conservation theory as a basis for
conservation action in working forests. Scientists engaged in a variety of
cutting-edge biodiversity experiments discuss their research, asking questions
basic to the management of forested ecosystems: How are conservation theories
developed? How robust are they in predicting patterns and processes at various
scales? To what extent are these theories guiding conservation action? By
considering biodiversity experiments from multiple perspectives, this symposium
aims to generate discussion on how best to engage researchers and practitioners
in collaborative efforts that will quicken the pace of positive change.
