Symposium
10: The invasion paradox: Reconciling biodiversity and invasion patterns across
spatial scales
Wednesday,
August 10, 8 AM - 11:30 AM, Meeting Room 517a, Level 5, Palais
des congrès de Montréal
Organizers:

Thomas Stohlgren
Description: Are
biologically rich species assemblages difficult to invade?
Will exotic species competitively exclude natives?
While these two questions have been the focus of much ecological
research, no clear consensus has arisen. This appears to be due, at least in
part, to the conflicting conclusions reached by ecologists working at small vs.
large spatial scales, and in experimental vs. observational systems. In this
symposium, we attempt to reconcile these disparate views by assembling strong
proponents of different research approaches: experimental, observational,
theoretical, and modeling, as well as those who typically conduct research at
different spatial scales. We have no illusions that we will resolve these
contentious issues here, but we do hope that initiating an open and honest
dialog will do much to advance our understanding of the mechanisms that drive
the complex interactions observed between native and exotic species.
