SPECIAL SESSION 5

An integrated trends analysis network

Monday, August 8, 1 PM - 2:30 PM , Meeting Rooms 516a-b, Level 5, Palais des congrès de Montréal

Organizers:  Douglas Muchoney (dmuchoney@usgs.gov), John Campbell, Thomas Loveland

Description: The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Land Cover Trends Project has developed a comprehensive methodology to measure regional land cover change. This approach involves ecoregion-based sampling and change analysis techniques; the use of Landsat MSS and TM data; characterizing the types, rates, and temporal variability of change for a 30-year period; documenting the regional driving forces and consequences of change; and preparing a national synthesis of land cover change. The USGS proposes to develop an inter-institutional collaboration to expand the Land Cover Trends Project to include not only the existing landscape indicators, but also environmental, biological, and management indicators. The USGS and partner institutions have already invested in the requisite remote sensing data collection, archive and distribution systems. An Integrated Trends Analysis Network can be achieved globally within 3 years, providing timely support of biodiversity assessment and monitoring targets. The purpose of this special session is to inform ESA members about this evolving project. The session will encourage critical, clarifying dialogue toward engaging further support for the project.
