Diversifying
ecology
Monday,
August 8, 1 PM - 2:30 PM, Meeting Room 516c, Level 5, Palais des congrès de
Montréal
Organizers:
Jason Taylor (jason@esa.edu), Melissa
Jurgensen-Armstrong
Description:
The Ecological Society of America has taken an active approach to
diversifying the field of ecology to ensure that the population of ecologists
reflects the gender and cultural diversity of the general population of the United States. Many minority students have limited opportunities to experience ecology and
related fields or to meet and interact with professional ecologists, and are at
a disadvantage when looking for role models. ESA has taken proactive steps to
address the recruitment and retention of under-represented groups. The purpose
of this session is to provide a review on the advances (and gaps) in diversity
programs and literature within ecological sciences with specific focus on the
recently completed Women and Minorities in Ecology (WAMIE) report and the SEEDS
program. The goals are three-fold: (1) to emphasize that ecology is valued and
perceived differently based on gender and ethnicity; (2) to highlight lessons
learned about developing programs/projects that successfully engage minority
communities regarding ecology and related disciplines; and (3) to explore the
advances in diversity literature as it applies to ecology.
