Description:
Part II of the Millenium Ecosystem Assessment (MA) will emphasize research
needs for future ecological assessments. We will explain how important
ecological information helped us to complete the assessment, and will address
critical gaps in our knowledge that caused some questions to remain unanswered.
We will also present a synthetic evaluation of these gaps. What is needed to
develop better scientific capacity for future ecological assessments? What are
the implications for research directions in ecology in the next 10 years? The MA
has been an opportunity for ecologists as a community to provide input for
international conventions in a global assessment format. As such, it can be seen
as a critical test for ecology: On the global stage, with important policy
decisions at stake – what would ecology deliver? Our Special Session will
answer this question and explain key ecological research frontiers towards
improving future ecosystem assessments.
