Description:
The Millenium Ecosystem Assessment Special Sessions focus on current
capabilities and frontiers in multi-scale ecosystem assessment by highlighting
the core findings of, and key challenges faced by, the Millennium Ecosystem
Assessment (MA). Over 1,600 scientists participated in this 4-year, multi-scale,
international assessment. The MA was designed to meet the needs of decision
makers and the public for scientific information concerning the consequences of
ecosystem change for human well-being. The assessment focused on ecosystem
services (the benefits people obtain from ecosystems), how changes in ecosystem
services have affected human well-being, how ecosystem changes may affect people
in future decades, and response options that might be adopted at multiple scales
to improve ecosystem management, and thereby improve human well-being. Part I of
these sessions synthesize core findings of the MA, including current conditions
of ecosystem services, the role of biodiversity in ecosystem services, the
findings of our regional assessments, and our scenarios about the future
provision of ecosystem services. We also discuss the implications for our
ability to achieve the United Nations Millennium Development Goals.
