Building
an ecological observatory network for regional- to continental-scale research:
The National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON)
Wednesday,
August 10, 8 AM - 11:30 AM, Meeting Rooms 210a-b-e-f, Level 2, Palais des congrès
de Montréal
Endorsed
by the American Institute of Biological Sciences (AIBS)
Organizer:
William Michener (wmichener@LTERnet.edu)
Description: NEON
will transform ecology. The design phase is nearing completion and NEON is
emerging as a national research platform that will enable studies on major
environmental challenges at regional to continental scales. Scientists,
engineers, and educators will use NEON to conduct real-time ecological studies
spanning all levels of biological organization and temporal and geographical
scales and to inform various audiences about our changing environment. Data from
standard measurements made using NEON will be publicly available. Presenters
describe the history of how NEON has evolved and identify the science and
education opportunities that will be supported by NEON. The facilities and
cyberinfrastructure underpinning NEON, including the creation of unique
networked sensing systems that will enable observations of the (previously)
unobservable are described. A continental perspective is provided on the
critical role of biodiversity science and bio-collections, and how best to
transfer NEON results to scientists, decision-makers, and the public.
