ORGANIZED ORAL SESSION 46

OOS-46: Ecological indicators at multiple scales

Thursday, August 11, 8 AM - 11:30 AM, Meeting Room 516c, Level 5, Palais des congrès de Montréal

Organizers:  Felix Müller (fmueller@ecology.uni-kiel.de), Eric Hyatt

Description: Indicator derivation and application have to be based upon sound scientific concepts and methodologies. In this context, a key problem emerges from the correct selection and consideration of spatio-temporal scales, i.e., concerning the relationship between the indicator itself and the indicated state variables or environmental targets. Up to now these scale problems and the results of hierarchy theory have not been integrated into environmental indication sufficiently. Therefore, within the session new concepts and results will be presented to find solutions and methods for a better involvement of scale-related issues in the future. Another important item of environmental indication is the correlation with environmental targets, such as ecosystem health, integrity, or sustainability. Especially the demand for sustainability indicators has affected various interdisciplinary attempts to integrate ecological, social, and economic components within comprehensive indicator sets. Referring to these interdisciplinary indicators, the scale problem increases, i.e., because ecosystem processes and societal dynamics do not operate with identical spatial extents and temporal characteristics.
