OOS-44: Linking the practice of stream restoration with the science of stream
ecology
Thursday,
August 11, 8 AM - 11:30 AM, Meeting Rooms 511c and 511f, Level 5, Palais
des congrès de Montréal
Organizers:
Paul
Mayer (mayer.paul@epa.gov),
Joe Williams, Sujay Kaushal
Description:
Restoration
is thought to be a means of improving the ecological health and integrity of
degraded stream ecosystems. Yet, with few exceptions, the ecological effects of
stream restoration are not well-documented, due partly to methodological
obstacles but also because ecologists often have limited interaction with the
community of engineers, hydrologists, consultants, and resource managers who
frequently direct restoration projects. Successfully linking ecological research
with the ongoing practice of stream restoration is critical to advancing the
science of restoration. This organized oral session seeks to bring together
scientists and practitioners of stream restoration to discuss the physical and
social limitations to restoring streams as well as the ecological effects of
restoration. The purpose of the session is to convey the multiple perspectives
of stream restoration and to enhance information exchange among the disciplines
involved.
