OOS-42: Applying ecological theories to multiple spatio-temporal scales and to
different landscapes in Europe
Thursday,
August 11, 8 AM - 11:30 AM, Meeting Rooms 511a and 511d, Level 5, Palais
des congrès de Montréal
Organizers:
Joerg Loeffler (loeffler@giub.uni-bonn.de),
Uta Steinhardt
Description:
Hierarchy
theory is one of the basic ecological theories. Spatial and temporal hierarchies
have to be considered when other ecological theories like island biogeography
and mosaic-cycle-dynamics are applied. Ecological theories are discussed on the
level of organisms and populations, rarely on the landscape level. Most
ecological theories were developed with respect to systems close to nature that
have rare appearances. Others far from nature dominate huge parts of the world.
The following questions will be addressed in this organized oral session: (1)
How are spatio-temporal scales linked to each other? (2) Is there a preferential
treatment to scale specific investigations? (3) What are the causes and
consequences of spatial and temporal heterogeneity in ecosystem structure? (4)
How do ecological hierarchies interact with other ecological theories? (5) How
can the gap between population ecology and landscape ecology be bridged? (6) How
can ecological theories be considered when investigating the traditional
European cultural landscapes?
