OOS-38: Sensors
and sensor networks in ecology
Wednesday,
August 10, 1:30 PM - 5 PM, Meeting Rooms 516a and 516b, Level 5, Palais
des congrès de Montréal
Organizers:
Stan Wullschleger (wullschlegsd@ornl.gov),
Robert Jackson, Todd Dawson
Description:
Ecologists
are continually challenged to develop methods to study how organisms respond to
and interact with their surrounding environment. In this session, speakers will
highlight the development and deployment of sensors and sensor networks in
ecology. Talks will identify current research directions, critical needs, and
future opportunities in this area. Special emphasis will be placed on
field-based or in situ approaches that enable ecologically-relevant
measurements to be taken at high temporal and spatial resolution. Speakers will
address how sensor development and low-power wireless communications either now
or in the future will enable the deployment of densely distributed sensor
networks for a wide range of biological and environmental applications. Session
participants will highlight recent findings and discuss how next-generation
measurement systems in ecology will require a multidisciplinary approach in
which ecologists will collaborate closely with engineers, electronic
specialists, and computer scientists.
