OOS-35: Mutualism, competition, and invasion: Applying ecological theory to
agriculture
Endorsed
by the ESA Agroecology Section
Wednesday,
August 10, 1:30 PM - 5 PM, Meeting Rooms 511a and 511d, Level 5, Palais
des congrès de Montréal
Organizers:
Laurie Drinkwater (led24@cornell.edu),
Jude Maul, Deborah Letourneau, Katie Monsen
Description:
Ecological
theory emerging from natural systems ecology provides a rich knowledge base for
managed ecosystem design, regulation, and stewardship. This synthetic organized
oral session shows how species interaction theory may guide the management of
small-scale interactions that can have large-scale spatial, temporal, and
biological impacts on production systems and the environment. Speakers will
present innovative approaches to the challenges of crop production and
protection, as well as mitigation of agriculture’s negative environmental
impacts. Each speaker will address spatial or temporal scales in unique ways, to
illustrate how these biotic interactions at the scale of individuals,
populations, and communities result in ecosystem scale consequences.
