ORGANIZED ORAL SESSION 34

OOS-34: Incorporating ecological processes at many scales into biogeochemical and global climate change models

Wednesday, August 10, 1:30 PM - 5 PM, Meeting Rooms 510b and 510d, Level 5, Palais des congrès de Montréal

Organizers:  Wilfred Post (postwmiii@ornl.gov), Jerry Olson, Changhui Peng

Description: Terrestrial feedbacks to the climate system vary significantly at decade to century time scale through disturbances such vegetation alteration, invasive species, altered fire regimes, large-scale insect outbreaks, nitrogen deposition, succession, competitive interaction, herbivore cycles, and soil development. Ecological processes, especially at decade and century time scales, are not sufficiently represented in regional or terrestrial global climate models. Incorporation of process based ecological representations of population and community dynamics and impacts on climate processes at various temporal scales, represents a challenging new direction where ecologist can significantly contribute to global climate change research. This organized oral session presents emerging concepts and algorithms needed to model the impact of population, community, and ecosystem processes on climate dynamics, inform ecologists of the development of next generation global change models, in order to engage ecologists in development of concepts and algorithms that represent terrestrial feedbacks to global climate change.
