OOS-30: Modeling movement at multiple scales
Wednesday,
August 10, 8 AM - 11:30 AM, Meeting Rooms 511c and 511f, Level 5, Palais
des congrès de Montréal
Organizers:
John
Fryxell (jfryxell@uoguelph.ca), Monica
Turner, Mark Boyce
Description:
There
has been an explosion of interest over the past decade in developing models of
movement and using such models to better understand the dynamics and
conservation of focal species. Some of this interest traces from dramatic
advances in satellite radiotelemetry technology, allowing spectacular new sorts
of data to be gathered. Balanced against this technological backdrop, there have
been equally dramatic statistical advances in developing new methods for
challenging models with real data and parameter estimation for complex movement
models. Finally, we are just beginning to appreciate the ramifications of such
complex movement behaviors as responses to landscape discontinuities, social
responses, and spatial memory on patterns of spatial organization and long-term
population dynamics. This session highlights recent advances in a
fast-developing field of vital importance in understanding the ecological
implications of spatial scale.
