Description:
This
oral session explores the relationship between ecosystem science and business
analysis—and the role of these fields in assessing a company’s environmental
and business outcomes. The speakers will consider use of public domain
information as well as the company’s own data on environmental management to
rate corporate environmental performance. One goal is to aid investors who may
seek to support a company’s restoration of ecosystem service values. Speakers
will consider economic valuation models for ecological goods and services and
note the possibility of internalizing environmental externalities into market
prices. Consideration also will be given to corporate policies and the
regulatory environment for fostering ecosystem conservation. Through reports on
private sector initiatives for incorporating environmental risks into corporate
decision-making, speakers will review key challenges for ecosystem science and
financial management. They will describe results from use of our understanding
of risks to ecological systems in business management. We will conclude by
hearing about ESA’s 2001Vision for engaging the private sector to sustain
ecosystem services.
