OOS-24: Conducting
global multi-scale integrated environmental management and research using
site-specific research: Lessons learned from the ILTER
Tuesday,
August 9, 1:30 PM - 5 PM, Meeting Rooms 516a and 516b, Level 5, Palais
des congrès de Montréal
Organizers:
Hen-Biau King (hbking@serv.tfri.gov.tw),
Patrick Bougeron
Description:
The
International Long Term Ecological Research (ILTER) network addresses three
themes central to environmental management and research:
(1) large spatial and temporal scales of study; (2) integration of
biological, physical, and socio-economic information; and (3) cross-site
comparisons to build conceptual and mathematical models to answer basic and
applied questions. This session explores how different national research
networks can best be linked in the ILTER, and the kind of process that can best
promote effective collaboration among national networks in order to promote
multi-scale integrated ecological analysis and modeling. The presented case
studies address: (1)
the challenges and potential contributions of ILTER collaboration; (2) the
principles of integration of information that are best suited to the ILTER; and
(3) some of the research and management themes common to the ILTER networks.
Results and recommendations from the session highlight the best possible scales
of linkages among national network members of the ILTER.
