ORGANIZED ORAL SESSION 23

OOS-23: The use of spatially explicit data in ecological investigations

Tuesday, August 9, 1:30 PM - 5 PM, Meeting Rooms 511c and 511f, Level 5, Palais des congrès de Montréal

Organizers:  Kelvin Conrad (kelvin.conrad@bbsrc.ac.uk), Barbara Smith, Lisa Rew

Description: Spatial pattern exists at different scales. Scales of pattern contribute additively to biological variables, so variability tends to increase with area sampled. Research into the spatial distribution of organisms has increased greatly with recent development of spatial technology and computer software capable of analyzing spatially explicit data. Studies of the spatial pattern of movement can be applied to investigations of genetic exchange. If studies of spatial pattern are extended through time, they may reveal the effects of climatic change, the impacts of disturbance, or the effects of human intervention. Studies of spatial pattern can lead to new insights into the ecology of a species and guide management practices. The aim of this session is bring together ecologists from a range of disciplines that are currently investigating spatial pattern. Different approaches to the investigation of spatial pattern, and the research outcomes, will be compared for a contrasting range of scales.
