OOS-12: Multiple time scales of ecological processes: Results from the LTER
Network
Tuesday,
August 9, 8 AM - 11:30 AM, Meeting Rooms 510a and 510c, Level 5, Palais
des congrès de Montréal
Organizers:
James Gosz (jgosz@sevilleta.unm.edu),
Robert Waide
Description:
The
LTER Network, celebrating its 25th anniversary of support from the National
Science Foundation, has contributed significantly to understanding ecological
processes at multiple temporal and spatial scales. The LTER program has expanded
its focus from an initial goal in 1980 of understanding long-term patterns in
different ecosystems to coordinating efforts to understand ecological phenomena
across scales and to couple our understanding of spatial and temporal
variability. This session will focus on the temporal dynamics of
ecological/biological processes for a diversity of ecosystems represented in the
LTER Network (desert, artic tundra, grassland, temperate and tropical forests,
freshwater streams, salt marsh, estuarine, and marine systems). Presentations
were selected to provide a diversity of results that can form the basis for
synthesizing commonalities in ecosystem dynamics and greatly increase our
understanding of the basic principles of ecosystem science.
