Description: Mer Bleue is a large, ombrotrophic bog located 15 km east
of Ottawa. During the last 6 years, research has been conducted on the
biogeochemistry and ecology of this system. The field trip will include
discussions of eddy-covariance tower measurements of CO2 exchange,
chamber-based measurements of CO2 and CH4 flux, plant
ecology and response to N and P fertilization, hydrology, the biogeochemistry of
a drained beaver pond, and peatland evolution and C modelling. Light walking on
boardwalks will be required. This trip is relevant to Symposium 5, OOS-13, and
OOS-21.
Equipment and Attire: As this
trip will include light walking, comfortable hiking or walking shoes are
recommended. Participants also should bring binoculars, a day pack, sunscreen,
and insect repellent.
