Returns Sunday, August 7 at 8 PM to the Viger Bus Depot, Level 1, Palais des congrès de Montréal

Fee: $75 US Dollars per person – Includes mini-bus transportation, pre-trip continental breakfast, sack lunch, beverages, and in-field lectures by experts.

Minimum: 12                        Maximum: 21

Organizer: Jeffrey MacDonald (jeffmacd@hotmail.com)

Description: This field trip through the natural corridor of the Rivière au Saumon watershed will allow participants to observe the major traits and vastness of the Eastern Township’s countryside. Particularly, each will have the chance to see an array of habitats of great ecological value that are home to several Canadian species in decline, such as the spring salamander, wood turtle, and peregrine falcon. The trip will also allow participants to discover habitats supporting a diversity of globally rare plants, found only on outcrops of serpentine deposits or in exceptional forest ecosystems (EFEs). As the Rivière au Saumon watershed is situated in the natural extension of Mont-Orford National Park, the excursion will focus on highlighting different approaches to conservation on public land (national park) and on the private land which forms nearly the totality of the natural corridor. The field trip, which is organized by the Société de conservation du corridor naturel de la rivière au Saumon (SCCNRS), will include several field lectures presented by a group of scientists (e.g., geologist, botanist, wildlife biologist, and habitat conservation biologist) that will accompany the group throughout the entire watershed tour, giving participants a rare look at one of the last relatively unfragmented landscapes in southern Québec.  This field trip is relevant to Symposium 12.

Equipment and Attire: This trip will include some hiking (on and off trail) and will require a moderate to good fitness level. Participants should bring hiking shoes, a rain jacket, binoculars, a water bottle, and a camera.
