EV-9:
Ecology teaching in K-12 schools: Status and vision
Emerging
Issues Forum of the ESA Education and Human Resources Vice President
Tuesday,
August 9, 8 PM - 10 PM, Meeting Rooms 511b-e, Level 5, Palais des congrès de
Montréal
Organizers:
Alan Berkowitz, Carol Brewer
Description:
We
will explore the creation of an international strategy to assess and update
ecology in K-12 science and environmental education. What frameworks should
guide an assessment of ecology in textbooks, curricula, and standards? What
sources of information about the status of ecology teaching already exist? What
might be the scope and practicalities of an ESA-sponsored K-12 Ecology Teaching
Study? Short presentations will provide an overview of large-scale initiatives
now underway, including: (1) ESA
Education Plan (Michael Mappin); (2) LTER planning grant (John Moore, Ali
Whitmer); (3) NEON (Carol Brewer); (4) Math Science Partnership projects (Robert
Bohanan); (5) restoration and sustainability education initiatives (Leanne
Jablonski); and (6) Urban Ecology Collaborative (Alan Berkowitz). The discussion
will provide participants an opportunity to explore the integration of these
initiatives and role of professional science societies in implementing an
international K-12 Ecology Teaching Study.
