EV-7:
Assessing the future of
North America
’s natural ecosystems using the latest
climate and vegetation models
Tuesday, August 9,
7:30 PM - 10 PM, Meeting Rooms 511a-d, Level 5, Palais des congrès de Montréal
Organizers:
Gary Benson, David Price
Description:
The
session will focus on the VINCERA project – a continental-scale factorial
study of projected climate change impacts on the natural ecosystems of
Canada
and
the
USA
.
Three dynamic global vegetation models (DGVM), each simulating changes in
vegetation distribution, carbon balance, and disturbance effects, were each
driven by six different general circulation model (GCM) projections of future
climate (three GCMs times two Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change SRES
emissions scenarios). The suite of simulations will help define future research
needs and inform policy development in preparation for changes in natural
vegetation and natural disturbance regimes. Presentations will include a review
of the use of multi-factorial modeling experiments to assess uncertainties in
GCMs and DGVM projections, reports on key findings by each of the three modeling
groups, and a synthesis paper.
