EVENING SESSION 5

EV-5:  Ecological complexity: Unifying ecological theory across scales

Monday, August 8, 8 PM - 10 PM, Meeting Rooms 516d-e, Level 5, Palais des congrès de Montréal

Organizers:  Bai Lian (Larry) Li, Lael Parrott

Description: The science of ecological complexity applies a complex systems approach to the study of the structure and dynamics of ecological systems in an attempt to better understand the interplay between living systems and their environment across a range of spatial and temporal scales. Research in the field uses quantitative methods to address questions at the interfaces of traditional areas of ecology. While considerable progress has been made, methodological issues are both open and central. In this evening session, we will introduce some of the key themes of ecological complexity: hierarchy and scaling, non-linearity, emergence and self-organization, and will then examine what advances have been made towards characterizing these phenomena in ecological systems. The session will include a 20-minute introductory presentation of key concepts in ecological complexity, followed by a round-table discussion in which session participants will be invited to exchange ideas with leading invited scientists in the field.
