EV-4:
Approaches and
challenges of using large-scale databases and digital libraries in environmental
education
Monday,
August 8, 8 PM - 10 PM, Meeting
Rooms 514a-c, Level 5, Palais
des congrès de Montréal
Organizers:
Robert
Bohannan, Alan Berkowitz, Andy Anderson
Description:
Inquiry
in science education takes many forms. Inquiry using databases and digital
libraries is relatively underutilized in environmental education. Yet the
complexity of research questions that ecologists ask typically draw upon diverse
sources of data in order to make sense of the ecological systems and
environmental problems that we study. Databases and digital libraries offer
substantial opportunities to expand how we conceptualize inquiry and use data in
science classrooms and environmental education. This session will provide
opportunities to share and discuss approaches, instructional materials and
resources, and tools related to using large-scale databases and digital
libraries for inquiry in education. Examples of questions that we will discuss
include: (1)
What databases and digital libraries lend themselves most readily to inquiry?
(2) What tools have been used to access, visualize, and analyze large-scale
data? (3) What frameworks have been developed to support professional
development of teachers using databases and digital libraries in inquiry? and
(4) What do we know about what teachers and students learn from engaging in
inquiry using large-scale databases?
