EV-3:
Discussion - Issues in ethics and intellectual property rights in
partnership with First Nations peoples
Monday,
August 8, 8 PM - 10 PM, Meeting Rooms 513e-f, Level 5, Palais des congrès de
Montréal
Organizers: Robin Kimmerer, Jesse Ford
Description: Traditional ecological knowledge (TEK) is
increasingly being sought by scientists and policymakers as a potential source
of ideas for emerging models of ecosystem management, adaptive management, and
ecological restoration. Concomitant with this growing awareness of the value of
TEK to ecologists, there is a need to increase awareness of the ethical issues
associated with responsible use of this knowledge. This session is designed to
identify and analyze the ethical questions surrounding sharing of traditional
knowledge and to represent diverse perspectives on ethical use of TEK including
intellectual property rights, international law, tribal/government partnerships,
and the innovative work of non-governmental organizations. The mutual benefits
from recognition and use of TEK depend upon a thorough understanding of and
respect for the cultural context in which TEK is embedded. The discussion
explores the challenges and opportunities of cross-cultural communication which
is fundamental to acknowledging the validity and utility of other non-western
knowledge systems.
