Description:
The Pantanal is a large wetland region (147,574
km2 in Brazil) in the center of South America - upper Paraguay River
basin (496,000 km2) western Brazil, touching Bolivia and Paraguay.
The 7th INTECOL Conference at Utrecht, Netherlands, on July 2004, stated:
“preserving vulnerable and characteristic wetlands of international
importance, such as the Pantanal...” The purpose of this session is to present
the results of the strategic action program for the integrated management of the
Pantanal, targeted at conducting field projects (44 projects in 4 years) and
instituting integrated management instruments. While the Pantanal is well known
for its magnificent biodiversity, the region has undergone a development model
with consequent and significant environmental impacts. The session will
summarize those results as well as the outcome of a consultative process to
bring about environmental improvements for the region, including a model of
integrated management. Four major topics will briefly be presented for
discussion: the strategic action
plan, water resources, land use, and biodiversity.
