EV-16:
Philosophy and history of ecology: Their use and misuse
Wednesday, August 10, 8 PM - 10
PM, Meeting Rooms 513a-b, Level 5, Palais des congrès de Montréal
Organizers:
Kurt Jax, Thomas Potthast, Astrid Schwarz
Description:
Communication within ecology and the
construction of a strong theoretical basis for ecology has been hampered by
ambiguous and non-operational concepts. Improving the situation demands for
interdisciplinary approaches towards ecological concepts including the use of
philosophical, philological and historical methods. We will discuss recent
approaches of applying such methods to ecology, addressing issues of, for
example, definition and concept formation, or the role of metaphors, and
historical explanations. In a round-table discussion with experienced
researchers from different disciplinary fields and research traditions, we will
highlight the state of the art of these approaches by providing examples for
their use in the context of empirical and theoretical ecological research. This
will be done in three (or four) “tandem-presentations”, focusing on
different topics, followed by discussions: “On definition and concept
formation” (led by K. Jax and J. Kolasa), “On Metaphors” (led by A.E.
Schwarz and S.T.A. Pickett), “On Tokens and History” (led by T.H.F. Allen
and G.M. Mikkelson), and “On Ethics and Values” (led by C. Larrere and T.
Potthast).
