EV-15:
The role of ecology in poverty reduction and international development
Wednesday, August
10, 8 PM - 10 PM, Meeting Rooms 510b-c, Level 5, Palais des congrès de Montréal
Organizers:
Christina Rumbaitis del Rio, Fabrice De Clerck, J. Carter Ingram
Description:
Globally,
1.2 billion people live on less than $1 per day. This population is highly
dependant on natural resources for daily survival, whether they live in rural or
urban areas. Often the poorest are the most vulnerable to degradation of natural
resources and loss of ecosystem services. While conservation is often seen as
“in opposition to”, or as “a result of” development, it is less
frequently considered as “a means to” sustainable development. This evening
session will identify ways ecological knowledge can be applied to meet the dual
needs of poverty reduction and environmental conservation. Small group
discussions will be facilitated on the issues of ecology and hunger, disease,
water resources, security, economics, and energy. The session will conclude with
a whole-group discussion on defining research needs and action on the issues of
poverty reduction and environmental conservation. We hope that the discussion
will lead to a symposium session at the 2006 ESA Annual Meeting and ESA position
papers on these issues.
