Description: A major
goal of the Ecological Society of America (ESA) is to develop and promote a
quick response and strategy to proposed legislation, congressional hearings, and
events of national concern. Information provided by a quick response should be
based on sound ecological theory, principles, and understanding. This evening
session, proposed by the ESA Board of Professional Certification (BPC), is
organized to demonstrate how professional ecologists plan for and respond to
natural disasters (e.g., hurricanes, wildfires, tsunamis). The development of a
professional quick response strategy needs to be based on a landscape-level
perspective, interdisciplinary teamwork, a holistic temporal/spatial
understanding, and regional land-use planning. Through panel presentations led
by Debra Peters, M.A. Sanjayan, and Kevin Erwin, examples will be presented
regarding how an understanding of cross-scale interactions is necessary in
forecasting catastrophic events. We predict that increasingly professional
certified ecologists will be invited to help plan for and respond to
catastrophic events.
