Dr. Groffman’s research addresses nitrogen (N) gas fluxes from soils, N dynamics in riparian zones, winter climate change effects on snow, soil frost and N dynamics in forests, calcium and N interactions in forest soils, nutrient cycling in urban ecosystems, and effects of exotic earthworm invasion on soils. Dr. Groffman is an author on over 160 refereed journal articles and has served on the editorial boards of the Journal of Environmental Quality, Biology and Fertility of Soils, Ecology, and Ecosystems.  He was chair of the Wetland Soils Section of the Soil Science Society of America and is a member of the U.S. National Committee for Soil Science. He was a lead author for the 2nd (Wetlands) and 3rd (North America) Assessment Reports of the Intergovernmental Program on Climate Change.
