Dr. Covich’s expertise lies in understanding the effects of disturbances such as hurricanes on aquatic ecosystems and food webs. He is currently examining the long-term effects of hurricanes, droughts, and urban growth on river networks and food webs in Puerto Rico. Dr. Covich has served as a president of the Ecological Society of America and the American Institute of Biological Sciences. He was a member of the National Research Council panel on Freshwater Ecosystem Services, and serves on the Board of Directors of the International Congress of Ecology (INTECOL). Dr. Covich has recently participated in several international workshops on biodiversity and ecosystem functioning and on effects of climate change on freshwater ecosystems. He is interested in coupled natural-human systems research and adaptations to climate change.
