Dear Senator (last name of Senator):
(OR FOR LETTERS TO REPRESENATIVES):
The Honorable (full name of Congressperson)
U.S. House of Representatives
Washington , DC 20515
Dear Representative (last name of Congressman):
As a constituent and scientist, I write to ask for your support in helping to address the weakened research and development portfolio of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). NOAA research provides invaluable advances in understanding fisheries, weather, climate change, and management of the nation's coasts—of great importance to the increasingly number of U.S. citizens who live there.
The agency has been essentially flat-funded for the last five years and the budget proposed by the Administration for fiscal year 2008 shows no sign of altering course. The majority of the agency's research is supported by its Office of Oceanic and Atmospheric Research, which would stay essentially flat-funded. The National Ocean Service would continue its decrease in funding since fiscal year 2005, while the National Marine Fisheries Service would reflect no real change since fiscal year 2003.
Yet NOAA supports (ADD INFORMATION ON BENEFITS OF RESEARCH SPONSORED BY NOAA AT YOUR LAB OR UNIVERSITY).
I ask that you do your best to help address this situation and thank you for your serious consideration of my request.
Sincerely,
(YOUR NAME AND HOME MAILING ADDRESS)
