Dear Senator (last name of Senator):

Dear Representative (LAST NAME OF CONGRESSMAN):
As a constituent I write to express my great dismay that the Department of Energy Headquarters is blocking the release of funds needed to keep the Savannah River Ecology Laboratory (SREL) running through the remainder of fiscal year 2007. Located on the Department of Energy's Savannah River Site ( SRS ), SREL has conducted independent, scientific evaluations of SRS operations for over 50 years. Without additional funding, SREL will need to shut down its ecological research and environmental education programs within a few weeks.
DOE Headquarter's short-sighted action comes at a time when this nation is considering a broad range of energy sources, increased use of nuclear power among them. The objective scientific research conducted at SREL is imperative to assess how nuclear activities can be compatible with environmental quality. Without this lab, federal and state governments risk public credibility with regard to nuclear activities. [INSERT OTHER EXAMPLES OF SREL CONTRIBUTIONS].
I urge you to take whatever action possible to prevent closure of the Savannah River Ecology Laboratory.
Sincerely,
