ESA-INTECOL 2005 JOINT MEETING
Ecology at multiple scales/EcolOgie: une question d’échelles
90th Annual Meeting of the Ecological Society of America (ESA) and
IX INTECOL International Congress of Ecology
7-12 August 2005 • Montréal, Canada
First Announcement and Schedule of Calls for Proposals
April, 2004
One of the dramatic changes in ecological research has been the recognition
of an ability to conduct research at multiple scales. These multiple scales
are spatial, temporal and biological. As our insights at differing scales grow,
so does our capacity to link information across scales. These linkages enable
us, on the one hand, to develop a richer understanding of the mechanisms that
drive the ecological patterns and processes that we see, and on the other hand,
to understand and demonstrate the significance of these patterns and processes.
The ultimate result of these linkages will be both greater scientific understanding
and greater capacity to communicate ecological results to policy communities
from local to regional to global scales.
This joint meeting of national and international ecological societies offers
a perfect venue to present and evaluate ecological information at multiple scales,
and especially to focus on and incubate cross-scale linkages.
Scientific Program
This exciting program will include General Session Plenary lectures, symposia
and Organized Oral sSessions, Contributed Oral and Poster Presentations, Workshops,
Special Sessions, Evening Sessions, Discussions and Scientific Field Trips.
Ecologists worldwide are invited to submit proposals for the program categories
listed below. To get additional information, guidelines for proposal submission
will be posted at the ESA Meeting website (www.esa.org/montreal) and the INTECOL
website (www.intecol.net)
While these activities are primarily for meeting registrants, the overall meeting
program will also include lectures and sessions open to the public.
Symposia: This meeting will include 24 symposia, each organized
around a specific theme or topic. These will be half-day sessions lasting from
21/2 to 31/2 hours. Talks in Symposia range from 20 to 30 minutes in length
and time for synthesis, summary and discussion is encouraged. Proposals for
these Symposia will be reviewed, evaluated and ranked by the Program Committee.
The most suitable proposals will be accepted. Symposium proposals may be from
any area of ecology, but those that relate to the overall theme - Ecology at
Multiple Scales - are especially encouraged, as are those that will be of broad
interest to both ESA and INTECOL attendees.
Organized Oral Sessions: Organized Oral Sessions provide an
additional opportunity to propose a session of talks focused on a specific topic
with invited speakers. Additional presentations may also be assigned to these
sessions by the Program Chairs. Organized Oral Sessions do not require as broad
a level of interest and synthesis as is expected of Symposia. Organized Oral
Sessions will last from 21/2 to 31/2 hours in length scheduled at half-day intervals.
Each talk in an Organized Oral Session will be 15 minutes long, with 5 minutes
for discussions or questions. Proposals for Organized Oral Sessions will be
reviewed, evaluated and ranked by the Program Committee. The most suitable proposals
will be accepted.
Workshops: Workshops are focused on transferring specific
knowledge or skills to others, with substantive interaction among participants.
Workshops may involve one presenter, a series of lectures or a panel or may
involve computer-based training. Workshops are typically scheduled for full
or half days. They are usually held before the formal scientific program begins,
running concurrently with field trips. Proposals for 11/2 hour workshops taking
place during the lunch break during the week may also be submitted. Workshops
usually involve a modest fee. Proposals for workshops are invited. Review and
placement will be made by the Program Chairs.
Special Sessions and Evening Sessions: These discussions,
panels and presentations are a supplement to the formal program that provide
an opportunity for extended dialogue and exchanges. Most will be scheduled at
select times, including during the lunch break or in the evening. These sessions
will last from 11/2 to 2 hours. Submission of proposals for Special Sessions,
Lunchtime Discussions and Evening Sessions is welcome. Review and placement
will be made by the Program Chairs. Please note: These sessions are NOT intended
for the presentation of formal research papers.
Contributed Oral Sessions: Attendees are invited to submit
abstracts of formal research presentations to be presented orally in sessions
that will be organized by topic by the Program Committee. These talks will be
15 minutes in length with 5 minutes for questions or discussion.
Contributed Poster Sessions: Attendees are invited to submit
abstracts of formal research as scientific posters. Presentations of these posters
will be made during a late afternoon Poster Pub but the Poster will be on view
for an entire day. The sessions will be organized by topic by the Program Committee.
