Millennium Conference 2009:
Water-Ecosystem Services, Drought, and Environmental Justice

The ESA Governing Board is pleased to announce that the first Millennium Conference, Water-Ecosystem Services, Drought, and Environmental Justice, will be held November 9-12, 2009, in Athens, Georgia. The conference is being co-chaired by Ted Gragson of the University of Georgia and Steward Pickett of the Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies. This Conference will bring together ecological and social scientists and students to explore the development of scientifically and socially sound solutions to water allocation in times of drought. The ultimate objective is to reduce conflicts among water users, enhance environmental justice, and more effectively manage public responses to water scarcity.

Attendance will be primarily by invitation and by selection from an open call for poster abstracts held in the spring of 2009. Live webcasts of all keynote speakers and detailed information on the website will be available to encourage participation from a larger audience.

For further information, contact Aleta Wiley, Science Program Assistant at ESA Headquarters, 202-833-8773 ext. 218; aleta@esa.org.

Submit Educational Materials to ESA’s Digital Teaching Library!

ESA is seeking images and classroom activities related to the three linked themes of the Millennium Conference. All EcoEd DL submissions are peer reviewed for scientific accuracy, and classroom activities are also reviewed for classroom use. In order to be peer reviewed and published in the special collection in time for the November conference, we must receive your submission by September 15, 2009. We welcome additional teaching contributions after that deadline for inclusion in the general collection. For more information, including a list of specific topics relevant to drought that are of particular interest, please visit the EcoEd DL website.
