2012 Travel Award Winners

Jiaqi Tan - Georgia Institute of Technology

Jamie Lamit - Northern Arizona University

Sandra Holden - University of California, Irvine

Dear Microbial Ecology Section members:

Thanks to all of the students and advisors who contributed applications and letters for ESA's Microbial Ecology Section 2012 Student Travel Awards. As you know, we were able to support three travel awards this year, thanks to a long-range planning grant from ESA and a generous donation from Springer, the publisher of the journal Microbial Ecology.

We received a number of very strong applications from students, and it was fantastic to see so much exciting research being done by young professionals in microbial ecology. Of course, this also made our decision rather difficult!

With that in mind, it is my pleasure to announce the names of the recipients of this year's travel awards:
Jiaqi Tan, Georgia Institute of Technology
Jamie Lamit (Northern Arizona University)
Sandra Holden (University of California, Irvine)

Congratulations to this year's Travel Awards recipients! Each of these students will receive a $500 award at the Microbial Ecology Section's business meeting, which will be held at the Annual Meeting in Portland: Wednesday, August 8, at 11:30 am, in room C124, Oregon Convention Center (immediately following OOS 23 - The Great Indoors: Recent Advances in the Ecology of Build Environments).

Thanks, again to everybody who submitted an application and a letter. I wish that we could support more of the outstanding work that is being done by our student members.

I hope to see you all in Portland next month.
