Travel Awards for Latin American Students

The Ecological Society of America (ESA) announces the availability of travel awards, sponsored by the Ford Foundation, for graduate students from Latin American countries to participate in the international conference Ecology in an Era of Globalization: Challenges and Opportunities for Environmental Scientists in the Americas , January 8 - 12, 2006, in Merida , Mexico . This conference is designed to develop strategies to increase international access to ecological knowledge and to increase collaboration among environmental scientists on global environmental issues with particular relevance to the Americas . Students from Mexico are eligible for an award of $500 US. To accommodate differences in travel costs, students from all other Latin American countries are eligible for an award of $1,000 US. To apply, please submit the following, in English or in Spanish, to me mexico@esa.org, with "Latin American student travel award" in the subject line by October 15, 2005:

  • complete contact information, including name, postal address, email address, and telephone
  • a copy of your abstract submitted to the meeting, if you are presenting (students making oral or poster presentations will have first priority for travel awards).
  • a brief statement (maximum 500 words) describing how participation in this conference will further your education and career goals in environmental science
  • a brief resume (1 page)
  • a statement of support from a faculty advisor of recognized academic experience

Applications will be reviewed and awardees will be notified by November 18, 2005. Approximately 100 awards will be available and are expected to be used to support costs of travel, registration, lodging, and meals.
