The static nature of traditional protected areas makes conservation of migratory animals difficult, since species will likely travel outside these areas during part of their life cycle.
In the May issue of Frontiers, Bull et al. discuss more dynamic conservation approaches to preserving migratory species, including mobile conservation areas and biodiversity offsets, using the migratory saiga antelope (Saiga tatarica) as one example.
