High School teachers from the greater Austin metropolitan area are especially welcome. ESA scientists are welcome to join in the discussions that will support our high school educators.

Join us for an event-packed day where you will:
- Learn ways to integrate ecological literacy and research into the high school curriculum.
- Interact with top ecological scientists and learn the latest in ecological research and education.
- Exchange ideas with teachers from around the country.
Learn Best Instructional Practices from exemplary curricular to help students of all learning styles to:
- Develop authentic scientific inquiry and reasoning
- Integrate Environmental Systems concepts and skills across the curriculum
- Visualize data graphically
- Understand key characteristics of aquatic systems
- Learn nationally-recognized GLOBE Hydrology protocols
Career Connections and College Success.
Many skills learned during activities are related to real world STEM jobs associated with Environmental Issues, Engineering, etc. Tips from Award-winning Texas Tech University’s Outdoor School curricular units will promote college success and access to STEM careers.
Presenters
The workshop is presented by a diverse, multidisciplinary team from the Texas Tech University Llano River Field Station Outdoor School, led by Dr. Tom Arsuffi and Megan Dominguez, Texas Agrilife Extension Service. The Outdoor School is an award winning, Texas High School Project, recognized as an Exemplar Model to Improve K - 12 STEM learning for Urban Students. It offers a standards and inquiry-based, trans-disciplinary, curriculum that incorporates best practices to improve instruction for at-risk students as well as professional development for teachers.

Part I: Environmental Systems This workshop will reinforce the nature of Scientific Inquiry, integrate concepts and skills from the natural and social sciences and offer strategies to promote critical thinking around Sustainability issues. |

Part II: Aquatic Systems Examine the science of water and the role of organisms in monitoring water quality. |

| 1:00 pm | Attend ESA scientific sessions of your choice. Participants will be guided to apply lessons learned from the workshop during this time. |
| 3:30 pm | What should College Students be able to do when they enter College? Use the Universal Design for Learning framework to build the requisite student knowledge, skills, and enthusiasm for college and careers. |

Registration information
Eligibility
This workshop is limited to 50 high school teachers. ESA will waive the Annual Meeting registration fee for Texas high school teachers. No waiver is given to university faculty. Priority will be given to teachers from the greater Austin metropolitan region and to teachers participating in the LEAF program*.
Registration is accepted through July 15, 2011. The registration fee of $20 gives you access to the ESA Annual Meeting on Monday, August 8. This fee includes breakfast, lunch and a reception as well as materials. If you would like to participate in the rest of the ESA Annual Meeting, additional fees apply. To register for Educator Day, please fill out the Registration Form.
Continuing Education Units (CEU): $30 (optional).
If desired, participants can apply separately, for one CEU for the workshop. The CEU is offered through Texas Tech University and will be available onsite. Only checks will be accepted.
The 2011 High School Educators Ecological Literacy and Research Day is part of the Ecological Society of America’s (ESA) 96th Annual Meeting in Austin, TX. The theme of the ESA Annual Meeting is: Earth Stewardship: Preserving and enhancing the earth's life-support systems.
*ESA welcomes teachers in the LEAF Educator Network, established in partnership with The Nature Conservancy with support from The Toyota USA Foundation. The LEAF network is open to teachers from selected environmentally-themed urban schools.
