NCEP Exercise - Scale and Magnitude of Deforestation: Determining Rate and Extent of Change Using Remote Sensing and a GISIn this exercise, students will assess occurrences of regional deforestation in the Amazon. Students will develop a change-detection model of deforestation in the headwaters of the Amazon by interpreting and analyzing remotely sensed, continuous biophysical data using a GIS. Students will then use this information to make recommendations on reserve system design, policy, and regulations. Additional teaching materials on topics relating to biodiversity conservation and ecology can be obtained free of charge by registering at the Network of Conservation Educators and Practitioners’ website (http://ncep.amnh.org).
