Biology and Conservation of Loggerhead Sea Turtles--Image 01 of 6Juvenile loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta) in a plastic pail in South Carolina. Loggerheads are an endangered species, populations of which are declining in part due to human interference with their reproduction cycles. This hatchling was displayed to attendees during an educational event in South Carolina called Keep Light’s Out for Loggerheads. It was a straggler that was excavated from its nest on the beach. This photo was taken in the wild. Management programs such as this one in SC dig stragglers from the nest four days after the last hatchling track is noted. They collect the hatchlings and then exhume the nest, meaning they collect live hatchlings, count the broken eggshells of ones that already got out and count the dead hatchlings.
