NCEP Exercise- Thirsty metropolis: A Case Study of New York City's Drinking Water

This case study is divided into two parts to explore the development of the drinking water supply for New York City. First, a brief history on the evolution of the water supply system is presented. The case study divides students into groups to examine various perspectives in the development of the water supply. This exercise allows students to consider the practical challenges in such a scenario and work through a real life case study in search of a solution. Second, an epilogue section allows students to compare their proposed solutions to the actual actions. Up-to-date information on the status of the water supply system is provided to provoke discussion among students on recent pressing issues for stakeholders. Additional teaching materials on topics relating to biodiversity conservation and ecology can be obtained free of charge by registering at the Network for Conservation Educators and Practitioners’ website (http://ncep.amnh.org).
