Bison (Bos bison) were important native grazers in the Great Plains. Studies at the Konza Prairie Long Term Ecological Research (LTER) site have shown that bison grazing and periodic fires interact to affect a broad suite of ecological properties and processes, including the dynamics of the plant and consumer communities. This photograph originally appeared on the cover of Ecology (86:4) in April of 2005.
