The image is simply of a rare species of wood lily (Lilium philadelphicum) on Isle Royale, a unique island ecosystem in Lake Superior. Although once widespread across North America, the lily has become rare, threatened, and even extirpated in many parts of its geographic range due to: a) loss of prairies; b) picking/harvest by people; and, c) herbivory by white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus). On Isle Royale the lily grows in dry forest areas, rock outcrops, and meadows.
