NCEP Exercise- Introduction to Remote Sensing: Relating Features In An Image With What Is In The Field: An Example of Using Hardcopy Imagery

An important skill for conservation practitioners to have in order to benefit from remotely sensed imagery is to be able to accurately relate features in satellite images or aerial photographs with what is on the ground. One way to learn and hone these skills is to take imagery into the field and try to locate and identify features in the image. Using imagery in the field on a regular basis will improve a student’s understanding of what can and cannot be identified using particular types of imagery. This exercise illustrates the utility and importance of taking remotely sensed imagery to the field. To simulate a field experience, students use a photograph that was acquired from an area in Vietnam. Additional teaching materials on topics relating to biodiversity conservation and ecology can be obtained free of charge by registering at the Network for Conservation Educators and Practitioners’ website (http://ncep.amnh.org).
