The TIEE Research Practitioners Project: Faculty Investigating Active Teaching and Student LearningThis article published in Volume 5 of TIEE describes the TIEE Research Practitioners Project. For the project, fifteen ecology, environmental science, and biology faculty conducted research on the effectiveness of student-active teaching methods in their classrooms, with the goal of improving their teaching practice in a manner that would be recognized as scholarly work.
The article describes the characteristics of the research projects, their impacts on student learning, and changes the participants made to their teaching practices. The faculty participants worked collaboratively in teams to design and conduct their research, and each team investigated improving student abilities relevant to biology and ecology education, such as how to work with data, interpret graphs, and design and conduct ecological investigations.
